Peppadew Peppers Bring Sweet and Spicy Notes to this Avocado Spread
Although the base of this recipe is avocados, one of the standout ingredients is the surprising addition of Peppadew peppers. Why Peppadews? They’re not just visually striking. They also offer a delightful balance of tangy sweetness and a little heat. Their unique flavor profile creates a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery avocado.
If you’re not already familiar with Peppadew peppers, they’re worth exploring. Although Peppadew is a brand name for the pickled, red peppers used in this avocado spread, the actual pepper is know as the Juanita pepper. The Juanita is a relatively new pepper to the culinary world, having only been discovered in the early 1990s in South Africa. These vibrant red peppers bring an extraordinary burst of flavor to this spread.
They are described as having a surprising burst of heat, followed by a notable sweetness that has become one of the signature characteristics of the Juanita pepper today. Less spicy varieties have been cultivated over the years as well, and they continue to be a favorite for stuffing, snacking and cooking.
In this simple avocado spread recipe, the sweetness of the Juanita peppers adds depth of flavor, while the vinegar from the brine brightens and helps balance the creaminess of the avocado. Unlike other peppers that can be overpoweringly spicy, Peppadews have a gentle warmth that adds a subtle kick without overwhelming the palate. This makes them an excellent choice for serving as an addition to charcuterie boards, dips, and this Sweet & Spicy Avocado Sandwich Spread.
I love the fact that Juanita peppers are readily available in both the hot and mild varieties at many local grocery stores. You can find them in jars in the pickle and olive section, or in bulk at the olive bar of specialty stores. The olive bar is an especially nice option if you’re short on refrigerator space and only need enough of these peppers to make this recipe. I tend to buy a jar though, because they are a favorite for snacking and never seem to last long at my house.
How I Like to Enjoy this Easy Sweet and Spicy Avocado Sandwich Spread in 5 Minutes
As I said, I’m not a sandwich girl. Sandwiches are not something I crave or gravitate to naturally. They are something I tend to make after a long day of yard work when I’m too physically exhausted to even think about cooking. However, when I do get the taste for one at home, my go-to sandwich consists of lightly toasted, thin-sliced, whole grain bread, a generous smear of this avocado spread, provolone cheese, lettuce tomato and red onion, with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
Sometimes I’ll substitute a Vidalia onion and throw a few thinly sliced cucumbers on there, as well. That’s it. That’s my signature sandwich. Husband likes the addition of a spicy Calabrese and Genoa Salami on his.
Honestly, there are days when I don’t even get as far as making the whole sandwich. Like I said, I’m usually making a sandwich on a weekend after having done some serious work in the yard. After whipping up a batch of this spread, I’m perfectly content to dip a few crackers in it and call it a meal. That said, this spread does make a lovely dip and a delightful addition to any charcuterie board.
Let’s Get Social!
I suppose when I get that tired, it’s a good thing that this simple avocado spread recipe comes together in such short time. All that’s needed is four (4) ounces of mashed avocado (both fresh and pre-packaged avocado work well here, too), two (2) Tablespoons of mayonnaise (I prefer Duke’s for this recipe although I stand by Hellman’s as well), one (1) generous Tablespoon of roughly chopped Peppadews (mild or spicy), a touch of lime juice, salt and garlic powder to finish. Mash everything up together and you’re ready to start spreading and enjoying.
There you have it – your new favorite avocado sandwich spread with just 6 simple ingredients! It really is the best avocado sandwich spread in my book. This easy recipe is perfect for adding a creamy, nutritious touch to your sandwich. Whether you’re spreading it on toast, layering it in a sandwich, or using it as a dip, this avocado spread delivers delicious sweet and spicy flavor in every bite.
