Yuzu Furikake Seasoning. Trust me, you need this in your pantry.

Do you love the salty taste of nori, the earthy, nutty goodness of sesame seeds and the freshness of citrus? If so, you are going to love this seasoning. And by proxy, this recipe for Easy 8-Ingredient Furikake Ginger Vinaigrette.

The exact blend of ingredients in Japanese Furikake seasoning can vary widely. However, most contain some measure of white and black sesame seeds, sea weed, and sugar. And some even contain Monosodium Glutamate, (MSG). This flavor enhancing ingredient is widely used in a variety of processed foods.

MSG is generally thought to be safe. However, some people are sensitive to the ingredient. I find it gives me headaches, so I personally try to avoid it.

For this reason, I prefer to use organic Yuzu Furikake. I first read about this particular blend in a 2018 Bon Appétit feature by Rachel Karten. In her post, she shares how she experimented with the seasoning by putting it on everything from rice to chicken to roasted vegetables. And I love that it is MSG free.

It’s a versatile little bottle of delightful flavors, which is what led me to experiment with it as the seasoning for this vinaigrette.

Maria back-in-the-day

Honey Child

If I were still tending bees today, I would use honey from one of my hives. Nothing beats the taste and health benefits of raw, local honey. For example, raw honey contains pollen from the surrounding area. Many people who eat raw, local honey (including me) swear that their seasonal allergies are lessened by consuming it on a regular basis.  I’m definitely a believer, and in my post titled, Tips for buying local honey: Buy local, buy raw and know the pull, I talk about the benefits of raw honey.

The time of year honey is pulled from a hive can also impact the flavor and color. If you’d like to learn the backstory of how I fell into bee keeping, check out my post here.

A bright, Asian-inspired dressing for salads that can also be used as a marinade for chicken and fish.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Rice Vinegar (regular, not seasoned)

  • 1/4 tsp. sesame oil

  • 3 Tbsp. honey

  • 2 tsp. fresh grated ginger

  • 1/2 tsp. fresh minced garlic

  • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt

  • 1 tsp. Yuzu Furikake seasoning

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

Directions

  • In a small bowl, blend the vinegar, sesame oil, honey, ginger, minced garlic kosher salt and Furikake seasoning until just mixed.
  • Using a small wire whisk, very slowly drizzle the vegetable oil into the vinegar mixture a little at a time,. Whisk constantly until a light emulsion is made. This process will take approximately 3 minutes.
  • The vinaigrette will be ready immediately, but tastes best after it’s had at least 30 minutes to sit. This gives the flavors a chance to marry.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
